The Science
Description
Turkey Tail is named for the layered bands and fan-shaped growth associated with the species. The finished powder has a mild, earthy flavor and is designed for consistent incorporation into commercial food, supplement, cosmetic, and pet formulations.
Common Names
Turkey Tail, Coriolus versicolor, Yun Zhi
Functional Profile
Immune-supportive, prebiotic, antioxidant-supportive
Active Constituents
Beta-glucans, polysaccharide-K (PSK), polysaccharide-peptide (PSP), phenols
Extended Bioactives
- Beta-Glucans: Higher concentrations in the fruiting body. Linked to innate immune recognition and immune modulation.
- PSP (Polysaccharopeptide): Primarily derived from the mycelium. Linked to immune and gut-immune support.
- PSK (Krestin): Commonly produced from mycelium. Linked to immune modulation and clinically studied in Japan as an adjunct immune-support agent.
- Trametes versicolor: mycelium produces well-studied protein-bound polysaccharide complexes, including PSK and PSP, along with natural antioxidants and polysaccharide-rich fractions that support gut and immune health (Janjusevic et al., 2017; NCI PDQ; Angelova et al., 2022). PSP and PSK are mycelium-derived polysaccharide complexes, with PSP specifically identified as a polysaccharopeptide studied for immune and gut-immune activity (Chu et al., 2002; Ooi and Liu, 2000). While beta-glucans are often higher in the fruiting body, mycelial material contributes a broader mix of complementary compounds, supporting a full-spectrum approach across growth stages.
- Together, mycelium and fruiting body offer complementary bioactives, supporting a full-spectrum Turkey Tail approach aligned with immune and gut health.
